There will be some BR discs that give it problems. For full functionality, you should have recent Java installed, and appropriately pointed to for MakeMKV to find it. The issues are more likely associated with Blu-Ray. The MakeMKV forum is a good place for exploring that, and possibly also here on VH. Yes, your particular hardware could be a factor. This is probably not in the class of a cut & dry, "one-size-fits-all", "set it and forget it" software there can be some wrinkles, if you are not diligent about looking into them. It has worked pretty reliably for me for the most part, with occasional issues on certain rigs. I've used it for years (on Win 7 圆4), prior to purchasing a license. Congratulations to the developers, and I hope there will be more evolutions of this program.
